Stirling Water awarded
Aston
Dane plc
the complete systems package
for the £100M Almond
Valley and Seafield Improvements Project. Aston Dane will be providing
all PLC and SCADA control at five Waste Water Treatment Works. Six
months into the project the scope was extended to include the Esk Valley Purification Scheme and global telemetry reporting system
required to meet the new European Leigslation.
European Legislation (the Urban
Waste Water Treatment Directive) means that Britain must improve or stop discharging
untreated waste water to rivers or the sea by the end of 2000.
Legislation also dictates that adequate waste water collection systems
are provided to convey waste water to treatment.
The Esk Valley Purification Scheme, when complete at the end of
2000 will comprise:
i) The management and collection of combined sewer flows from
within the Esk Valley Trunk Sewer.
ii) The transfer of Esk Valley flows to the Edinburgh Eastern
Interceptor Sewer for treatment at Seafield WwTW.
Local Control
Aston Dane provided new Allen Bradley PLC5/04 together with ICA
control panels to achieve local control. Colour Paradigm Local
Operator Interface Panels VX550 enabled site based operators to view
process information and adjust settings. The interface also included
local alarm and event reporting and analogue trending.
Alarm Reporting
Alarm monitoring was carried out at the Seafield control room, with
backup support at Thames Water’s Maple Lodge site. Aston Dane
integrated a Serck Controls Telemetry system with SCX 5.2W software on
the Esk Valley, Almond Valley and Seafield schemes. Outstations at
eighteen sites transferred critical alarms and process information
from the site based PLC controllers to the Seafield control room.
Besides the telemetry client at Thames Maple Lodge site , a client
terminal is located at East of Scotland’s premises. This allows
transfer of regular contractual reports and plant information.
Sterling Water
East of Scotland Water appointed Sterling Water to The Almond
Valley, Seafield and Esk Valley schemes as part of a Private Finance
Initiative. Sterling Water is a consortium of Thames Water Utilities,
MJ Gleeson Group plc and Montgomery Watson. They will operate the
system for the next 30 years. |
